Drink up and go home???? |
This is a two part question for the "experts".
First I have a tape from 5/14/70 with a version of "drink up and go home". The only time I see the Dead played this was 8/5/70. Any clue what "group " performed this? And second was the mandolin player Dawg? It was around this time he played on Beauty so I would guess it is. I didn't know Jerry and Dawg played gigs this early.
If anyone has a whole tape of this would love to trade, I only have the 'Drink up' and 'Swing Low Sweet Chariot'.
And ty for your support!!!

Re: Drink up and go home???? |
Thanks to you too wine, I can't believe I missed this! I did do a search at SETLIST and it didn't retrieve anything.
I been out of it all day, we got SNOW last night and my sinuses have put me in the OZONE.
Thinks its time for a trip to napville before I hurt myself.
and again thanks for the indulgence.

Re: Drink up and go home???? |
Bus: all I know is they met very early on, 64 according to following "wiki" entry, on the "trip back east" by Jerry to become a country esque sort...so to speak. Here it is:
"Grisman grew up in Hackensack, New Jersey.[1] He started his musical career in 1963 as a member of Even Dozen Jug Band. His nickname, "Dawg" was affectionately assigned by his close friend Jerry Garcia in 1973 (the two met in 1964 at a Bill Monroe show at Sunset Park in West Grove, PA). "Dawg Music" is what he calls his mixture of bluegrass and Django Reinhardt-Stéphane Grappelli-influenced jazz, as highlighted on his album "Hot Dawg" (recorded Oct. 1978, released 1979)[2]. Stephane Grappelli played on a couple of tracks on the Hot Dawg album and then the 1981 recording "Stephane Grappelli and David Grisman Live". It was Grisman's combination of Reinhardt-era Jazz, bluegrass, folk, Old World Mediterranean string band music, as well as modern Jazz fusion that came to embody "Dawg" music."

Re: Drink up and go home???? MAC DL's mixin my post sorry |
Thanks Tell!!
I do recall now that you awakened my memory, the story of Jerry traveling cross country to see Bill Monroe and playing with David in the parking lot.
I also came across a jgb show from 5/21/68 my 9th birthday, which is coming up next week, that I would like to know if anybody can recommend how to DL a Sugarmegs show with a MAC?
For some reason Firefox DlHelper isn't compatible with the Sugarmeg's player on a MAC. Never had these issues with a PC.
I love my Imac for the speed and 24" screen but I was raised PC and some of this majic is beyond me-lol.

Re: Calling LBo re: MAC Question |
First, I had no idea that JG had his own B that long ago. When did he first start it?
I like it. The guitar sound reminds me of a certain guitar player from a certain British trio that I have been listening to a lot, lately.
Thanks for the link,

Funny you mention that trio, I had the exact same thought.
His licks are way bluesy and awfully Clapton-ish in arraignment.

I use Safari and I can't download it from the link you posted, you can just stream it. However if you go to this link
http://tela.sugarmegs.org/alpha/j.htmland then page down to that show (or any) and hold down the control button while you hit the download button it will download the .wma file which you can then play in quicktime. If you don't hold down the control button i think it will start streaming the show.

I use a combination of Flip4Mac (free) and Quicktime Pro (not free). Flip 4Mac opens WM files with Quicktime automatically. Quicktime Pro allows you to save DL'd items. I bought it for other puposes, but stumbled on the save feature for Windows Media files. Been worth the $29 for the upgrade.

Re: Drink up and go home???? |
I am not completely certain but I believe that is Dave Nelson of NRPS on the mandolin.

Re: Drink up and go home???? |
That would actually make the most sense wouldn't it! Since they were playin gigs with the boys then.
It also doesn't seem to be as precise as Dawg, which is what prompted my question who was playing with Jerry.
I knew the mystery wouldn't last long in here.
And thanks for the MAC help, "God Bless us everyone" TT

Re: Nelson usually...Grisman just once? |
As usual, this is entirely from vague recollections, but the acoustic shows I love, from May, June and Sep, 70, at best indicate (a couple of times? Phil at least once mentions him by name) Dave Nelson was the usual mandolin player when they would do the gospel tunes, and Marmaduke the vocalist with Bob on various tunes we've dicussed here many a time (ie, with NRPS/DEAD shows, you can hear them calling out for David/Dawson at least a few diff times). However, for at least one show, 9/20 I think, two mandolin players are present, and I always thought it was Nelson and Grisman...
Just scanned the listings here for the 9-20 show, and no mention of either...
Do you happen to know, LiA, if Grisman did play with them that show/yr?
Or am I just mis-remembering it, and it was always just Nelson?
EDIT: well, I actually found something out on my own (though I can just imagine LiA wrote this entire paragraph I lifted from the DEAD Essays site):
"So starting in May, the acoustic sets generally became longer, and David Nelson & John Dawson usually joined the Dead for a few songs. They also added some gospel numbers to end the sets. Nelson typically plays guitar in Cumberland or New Speedway; and in the gospel songs, he plays mandolin and Dawson sings. Some changes came in the summer - Nelson added mandolin to Rosalie McFall, and gradually other songs as well, until he was playing in quite a few songs. The Dead were working on the American Beauty album from August to October - a lot of new songs (covers and originals) got added to the acoustic set in August, so these later sets have a much more varied feel, with multiple instruments and that American Beauty vibe. Pigpen plays piano in the Fillmore sets, which adds a nice texture - piano generally wasn't heard in Dead shows until the Keith days. Special mention should also be made of 8/5/70, despite low vocals, since it was another all-acoustic show with the New Riders, the only one we have. (There's also a short set from 7/30/70 that's actually a Dead acoustic mini-set at a New Riders show.) Other guests in the acoustic sets were quite rare, compared to electric sets - David Crosby plays guitar in two songs on 7/14/70 (not that anyone can tell it's him), and David Grisman plays a second mandolin on 9/20/70."
So, I guess I had that right--perhaps you'd filled me once before...

Re: Nelson usually...Grisman just once? |
As far as I know, Grisman just played in one acoustic set, 9/20, playing mandolin along with Nelson.
I assume it was partly a matter of availability....after all, Nelson was also on tour with the Dead, and always at hand!

Re: Nelson usually...Grisman just once? |
Cool; yeah, was reading more at the DEAD ESSAYS site (the "acoustics" section) and it mentions DG moved to the Bay Area in Aug or so of 70 (or may have seen that elsewhere); anyhow, I imagine then that working on Beauty might have led to the one Sept show...
